AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs: Investigating the Catastrophic Damage to CPU Pins
Recent reports of a burned-out Ryzen 7000X3D CPU have made waves in the tech community. While it isn't often the CPU to blame, in this case the physical damage was significant. Igor's Lab has just published a report and findings based upon a fatally damaged CPU’s pins, uncovering what exactly is going on.
The investigation revealed that the catastrophic physical damage zone corresponds to CPU pins that supply power to the cores. As a result, the cause of the damage may be attributed to excessive voltage being applied to the pins. It appears that the tweaks applied to the CPU were comfortable for a Ryzen chip without 3D V-Cache, but not for the Ryzen 7000X3D.
These findings have important implications for PC builders and tinkerers alike. Overclocking and tinkering can be a fun and rewarding experience, but the consequences of making a mistake can be costly. We recommend that all Ryzen 7000X3D owners exercise caution and stay within the recommended voltage parameters to avoid catastrophic damage to their CPUs.
